ABSTRACT

Leakage of lactate dehydrogenase hormone from malignant tumors cells has been described. To measure the serum and aqueous lactate dehydrogenase ratio as diagnostic indicator for retinoblastoma. Prospective analytical study, carried out at Khyber Teaching Hospital Peshawar between 1[st] July 1999 and 31[st] December, 2003. Hundred newly diagnosed patients with retinoblastoma were registered for treatment. The aqueous lactate dehydrogenase was determined in fourteen randomly selected retinoblastoma patients, classified as advanced stage VB group [Rees-Ellsworth classification]. Samples from aqueous of these patients were analyzed for lactate dehydrogenase level using automatic scanner [Selectra XL, vital scientific Netherlands]. The Aquous lactate dehydrogenase was determined in 14 patients, who had a mean age of 36 months [range 2 months - 7.5 years]. There was equal number of unilateral and bilateral cases. Mean serum lactate dehydrogenase level was 730 i.u/litre and aqueous lactate dehydrogenase was 27,042 i.u/litre. Serum: aqueous lactate dehydrogenase ratio was 27:1 against normal ratio of 1 to 1. Aqueous lactate dehydrogenase levels were proved to be sensitive biochemical test for supporting the diagnosis of retinoblastoma

ABSTRACT

Lactate dehydrogenase enzyme is a non-specific marker found raised in different body fluids in various pathological conditions. This cross-sectional study was done in a medical college of Kolkata, India to find out lactate dehydrogenase level of aqueous humour in retinoblastoma cases. Aqueous humour lactate dehydrogenase level from 21 histology proved retinoblastoma cases and 21 controls was estimated and compared. Range of lactate dehydrogenase levels in retinoblastoma cases were 863-4819 IU/l; mean being 3396.9 IU/l; and in controls range was 48-146 IU/l; mean being 90.6 IU/l; 76.19% of retinoblastoma cases had value over 3000 IU/l. None of the controls had value above 150 IU/l. The difference between lactate dehydrogenase values of cases and controls was significant (p<0.001).

ABSTRACT

Estimation of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) isoenzymes in the serum and aqueous humor was carried out in 15 cases of benign ocular tumour, 15 cases of malignant tumor and 15 normal cases. Cases of both sexes aged between 1 year and 75 years were included. LDH, isoenzymes specially LDH4 and LDH5 are higher and LDH1 and LDH2 lower in sera of patients with malignant tumor specially retinoblastoma as compared to benign tumor cases and control cases. LDH isoenzymes in aqueous humor are significantly higher and show a characteristic pattern in retinoblastoma cases, the concentration was presumably too low in the control, malignant tumor other than retinoblastoma and benign tumor cases as its fractionation was not possible.

Os autores determinaram as correlaçöes entre as atividades enzimáticas da desidrogenase (LDH) e fosfoglicose isomerase (PGI) no humor aquoso e os principais achados clínicos-patológicos de portadores de retinoblastoma. Observaram que a atividade dessas duas enzimas no humor aquoso tende a ser mais elevada em presença de tumores grandes, tumores em estádio 5, neovascularizaçäo iriana e invasäo do nervo óptico pelo tumor

ABSTRACT

Os autores determinaram a atividade enzimática da desidrogenase láctica (LDH) e da fosfoglicose isomerase (PGI) no humor aquoso (HA) e soro (S) de pacientes com catarata congênita. Encontraram uma diferença estatiscamente significativa entre as médias da desidrogenase láctica no humor aquoso (LDHha), da fosfoglicose isomerase no humor aquoso (PGIha) e da desidrogenase láctica no soro (LDHs) nos dois grupos de pacientes. Dos portadores de retinoblastoma, 75.0%, 70.0%, 10.8% e 8.1% apresentaram aumento de LDHha, PGIha, LDHs e PGIs, respectivamente, quando comparados com os portadores de catarata congênita. No grupo de portadores de catarata congênita, näo houve correlaçäo ente as enzimas no humor aquoso e/ou soro. No grupo de portadores de retinoblastoma, houve uma correlaçäo positiva entre as duas enzimas no humor aquoso e entre as duas enzimas no soro. O padräo isoenzimático da LDH no humor aquoso dos portadores de retinoblatoma apresentou, como fraçöes mais elevadas, as isoenzimas LDH4 e LDH3. Do ponto de vista enzimático, o valor absoluto da LDH e da PGI no humor aquoso constitui o melhor critério para o diagnóstico de retinoblastoma. Resultados falso-negativos foram observados em 25% das dosagens da LDHha e em 30% das dosagens da PGIha
